EndNote

The Library has had a campus-wide licence with EndNote since January 2009, allowing students and employees of the University of Konstanz to install EndNote on their personal computers.

EndNote is an English language software programme that offers all the necessary functions for effective research management and idea organization.

This comprehensive bibliographic management programme allows you to easily collect, organize and integrate literature into a text and build a bibliography. Thus making EndNote useful for both students, who are writing a lengthy thesis or final paper, as well as for academics, who want to organize bibliographical data in their research. But the program can also be used by anyone who wants to compile an electronic "box of notes" and needs a place to keep their structured and bundled information.

Download the programme here.

There are versions available for Mac and for Windows. Please authenticate your eligibility for use with your matriculation or employee number and your library password. You can then install EndNote on your computer with the information provided. During installation simply follow the instructions in the set-up menu. The university's present EndNote licence runs out on January 31, 2015; by downloading the program you are agreeing to uninstall the software by this time.

Endnote and the Local Catalogue

There are two different ways to import data from our local catalogue into the bibliographic management programme EndNote.

1.) Import text data with an import filter

In the local catalogue mark every title that you would like to import into EndNote.  Next click the button "Download Selection" (Auswahl herunterladen) underneath the list and then choose "Bibliographic Format" (Bibliographisches Format).  You should then save the list of titles as text data on your computer's hard disk.

Now open EndNote.  In the Menu under File/Import you can select the import option and then choose the previously saved data. So that the text saved on your computer can be read correctly in EndNote, you'll need the following import-filter:

Download KonstanzImport.enf

Store the import-filter in EndNote's programme folder in the "Filters" folder.  The next time you start EndNote the import filter for our local catalogue will be in the list of all available import filters. Choose the text data and the correct filter.  EndNote will upload the saved data.

2.) Direct import over the Z.39.50 Interface

By importing over the Z.39.50 Interface you query our local catalogue directly out of EndNote with the help of a search screen.  With the function Tools/Connect you can establish a direct link to our catalogue.

In order to be able to use the direct import, you must first configure the Z.39.50 Interface with a connection-file.  You can download the connection file here:

Download KNUB.enz

Then you only have to copy the data (KNUB.enz) into the programme folder.  Normally it will look like this: C:\Programme\Endnote\Connections.

Alternatively you can also establish your own connection-file.  Here are the current connection parameters:

    * Server: 134.34.33.21 ; Port: 9999 (new IP address in effect since 23.09.08)

    * Data base: KON

    * We recommend Latin-1 as the text code

The next time you start EndNote you can activate the catalogue KNUB over the menu: File/ Connection Files/ Open Connection Manager just by selecting it in the list. This requires an active internet connection (for instance T-Online, Call by Call or a dial-up connection).

Tip: All titles will be shown with their call number. Next to the call numbers you will find the status information: in stock or on loan

Attention: Books on the semester reserve or on hand reserve will be shown as available (in stock).  Also there is currently a problem with researching by year published.  This problem is still being worked on.

Endnote should not be used as a replacement for catalogue research via the world wide web!
