| Kurze Inhaltszusammenfassung auf Deutsch | Der Theravada-Buddhismus war in seinem Ursprungsland (Indien) praktisch ausgelöscht. Er wurde durch die Maha Bodhi Society aus Ceylon am Ende des 19. Jhdts. re-importiert. Aber erst nach der Konversion von Dr. Ambedkar (1956),der dadurch seine als niedrig-kastiger Hindu angeborene Unberührbarkeit abschütteln wollte, hat die neo-buddhistische Bewegung eine nennenswerte Anhängerschaft (von meist so genannten 'ex-untouchables') gewonnen. Die Darstellung beginnt mit einem Literaturbericht zum Stand der Forschung über insbesondere die Neo-Buddhisten in Indien heute. Dann werden beschrieben und mit vielen Photos/Dokumenten 'aus dem Feld' veranschaulicht: 1. Die Maha Bodhi Society von ihren Anfängen bis heute; 2. die Entwicklung von Bodh Gaya zu DEM zentralen Ort des modernen (Welt-)Buddhismus; 3. die neo-buddhistische Bewegung von Dr. Ambedkar mit Nagpur als nur ihr eigenem zentralen Ort der einstmaligen Massenkonversion; 4. die TBMSG (Traylokiya Bauddha Mahasangha Sahayak Gana, 'Vereinigung der Helfer des buddhistischen grossen Ordens der Drei Welten'), eine indische 'Tochter-Gesellschaft' der 'Friends of the Western Buddhist Order' (FWBO, England), die sich auf vielfältige Art bemüht, indischen Neo-Buddhisten die Wurzeln ihrer eigenen (buddhistischen) Vergangenheit zeitgerecht zu vermitteln; 5. der All India Bhikkhu Sangha, als die (mit thailändischer Unterstützung) gebildete Dachorganisation buddhistischer Mönche in Indien; 6. die Vipassana-Bewegung von S.N. Goenka mit dem Zentrum 'Dhamma-Giri' in Igatpuri (Maharashtra). |

| Kurze Inhaltszusammenfassung auf Englisch | Theravada-Buddhism was extinct from India for many centuries. It has been re-imported from Ceylon by the Maha Bodhi Society at the end of the 19th century and gained greater numerical strength after the conversion of Dr. B.S. Ambedkar in 1956: Together with some four-hundred-thousand followers he 'embraced' Buddhism in an attempt to thereby shake off the fetters of his Hindu heritage of 'untouchability'. The study of 'Buddhists in India Today: Descriptions, Photos and Documents' begins with a detailed survey of the literature available especially on Neo-Buddhists and their (new ?) life-styles. It then describes: (1) The Maha Bodhi Society from its early beginnings until now. (2) The gradual development of Bodh Gaya into THE central place of (modern) world-buddhism. (3) The Neo-Buddhist Movement of Dr. Ambedkar and the development of Nagpur as its own central place of mass conversion(s). (4) The TBMSG (Trailokya Bauddha Mahasangha Sakayak Gana), an Indian branch of the 'Friends of the Western Buddhist Order' (FWBO, England) who through various agencies try to help Indian Neo-Buddhists to rediscover the roots of their Buddhist heritage. (5) The All India Bhikkhu Sangha as the new, with assistance from Thailand created umbrella-organization of buddhist monks in India. (6) The Vipassana Movement of S.N. Goenka with its huge centre in Igatpuri/ Maharashtra. The descriptions are illustrated/substantiated by many photos/documents which have been collected 'in the field'. |
